Training your dog to stay home alone

It is not unusual for the pet parent to leave the house during work hours. The pet parent has no choice but to leave the pet dog at home. According to experts, pet dogs can be kept alone in the house, unsupervised for up to eight to ten hours, but having said that it is important that you train your pet to be home alone at first. If you have a dog and you want to keep your dog inside your house you should know about ESA letter for housing.

The training must begin from puppyhood or in the first year. Getting the dog potty trained as early as possible makes it easier for you to train the dog. You can then start with alone time for your dog under your supervision, either making it stay inside a different portion of the house or making it sit inside a pet crate.

The amount of time the dog is left to stay alone should be gradually increased over time. However, this should be an activity and should not at all feel like a punishment. To make sure of this you need to give your dog treats before or after the alone time and provide your dog with toys and other items to spend time with.

Crate training

Crate training is one of the most effective ways to teach your dog to spend time alone on its own. It is best to start the crate training during the first year, as it will be easier for you to get your pet comfortable with staying alone as well as inside a crate. If you have animals you should know about emotional support animal certification.

Make sure that the crate is of perfect size: not too big, nor too small. This will allow the dog to move around without finding adequate space to discharge. To begin with, you should make the crate cozy for your pet dog and leave the door open. Once it is accustomed to it you can close the door and leave the dog for a longer time with his playthings inside the crate.

Don’t leave them alone for too long

Though your pet dog with proper training might be left alone for long, your pet shouldn’t be left alone for long hours. To be on the safe side you should keep the alone time inside the house no more than eight to nine hours and inside the house for no more than three hours.  If you have a dog you should know how to legally register emotional support dog

For a much longer time away from home, make sure that you drop in the house and interact with your pet, with either a walk or any other activity. This will allow them to get refreshed and expend their energy through exercise.

When you get back from work, you need to make sure to fulfill the daily exercise needs of your dog. Otherwise, you will end up with a hyper and unruly dog.
